Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (RA)

(c. 555-619 CE) The first wife of the Prophet who endured many of the burdens of the call to Islam with the Prophet at the beginning of his message.

“Khadija Bint Khuwaylid was the daughter of Khuwaylid Ibn Asad and the beloved wife of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). She was born in 555 CE and was the first lady to accept Islam.
Khadija Bint Khuwaylid also is commonly known as Khatijatul Kubra (Khadijah the great) and Ameerat-Quraish (princess of Quraish) and Al-Tahira (the pure one) belonged to the clan of Quraish in Makkah. She was a wealthy woman, who had been married twice and widowed before marrying Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). She was a trader and her caravans would go to Syria, Egypt, and other Arab countries. It is in one such caravan which Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) lead, and brought her double the profit, that she decided to marry him. She had heard about the personality of Prophet (PBUH) and seeing his honesty she proposed him for marriage. At that time, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was 25 and she was 40 years old. Muhammad accepted the proposal and both got married. She was blessed with seven children of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) namely, Qasim, Ibrahim, Abdullah, Zainab Muhammad, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthum, and Fatimah. She was the first one to accept Islam after the first revelation on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Khatijatul Kubra passed away on 11th of Ramadan, in 619 CE at the age of 65 a year known in the prophet’s life as: The Year of Sorrow.

She rests in peace in Jannatul Muallah in Makka. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) regarded her as the noblest of women along with Sayyada Mariam.
